![]() ![]() But I'm still glad to have new episodes, because their quality enough to justify still being on. That's why I kind of wish it ended after series 7, because the series finale had that kind of vibe to it. I think the show needs to end with a "Withnail and I" type ending, with Mark realizing that Jez is just holding him back, and goes off and finds success, while Jez is bound to exist as a pathetic failure. And although that fits Mark's character, its becoming more and more unbelievable. Mark's just beginning to look more and more of a chump for letting him stick around. And then to force in a Jez love triangle was so unnecessary, it felt so forced. As if it were funny that she might be leaving him. The way she tells Mark that she's thinking about taking a job in New York was just beyond rude, and she starts off the sentence by blatantly insulting him for no apparent reason. She comes off as sadistic to me, and I don't think that the writers intended that. Constantly going over to Jarod's to "nurse" him, constantly bringing around an old flame, never giving him a solid date for when she would be moving in. She consistently did things that would make ANY boyfriend uncomfortable, not just the neurotic Mark. And not only that, but it seems as if she were trying to put Mark in emotional suffering. But then she just became downright rude and overly sarcastic. She still had a bite to her, but it seemed appropriate and witty. She was extremely promising at first, she seemed like a woman who was extremely compatible with Mark, Someone who wouldn't look down on him in the manor that Sophie did. ![]() I completely agree with GrandMaster Young. Where the somewhat cynical tone used to give the series a sharp edge, it seems in danger now of just making it depressing. I know the basic remit is that nothing ultimately goes right for Mark and therein is the essence of the comedy, but it seems especially cruel to write a character who seems so nice and odd and right for him, have them end up together and suggest a happy ending and then, for no obvious reason, turn her into someone shallow and vacuous and unpleasant. I don't think it's got anything to do with characters drifting apart in any naturalistic way as they learn more about each other at least when Sophie got into drugs and clubbing it felt like a realistic progression for a person who was too mainstream and conventional for Mark in the first place. Somehow I can't imagine this Dobby larking around the woods doing a bit of fantasy cosplay or watching 'Manimal'. Now that season 7 ended on a positive note with her agreeing to move in with him, they've suddenly rewritten the character into a complete hipster *beep* who isn't remotely similar to the Dobby of old, presumably in order to drive a wedge between her and Mark and at the same time turn her into the sort of person that Jez might fancy (so they can work in that tired and uninteresting subplot). She seemed the ideal partner for him since she was supposed to be a geek and obsessed with sci-fi, WoW and LARP and a enough of a quirky misfit that Mark was able to be himself around her. Dobby was a great female counterpart for Mark in previous seasons when he was still struggling with Sophie and the pregnancy and then later his natural anxieties about being 'in a relationship with someone I actually like'. reply shareīasically it all seems to be an blatant attempt to force conflict for narrative or comedic purposes. Well, it was because he felt he was being judged by them. I thought he prided himself on being free of all that goo. I don't understand why Mark was so upset about not knowing the names of the bands. ![]() Went off on a bit of a tangent there, anyway the thing that really stood out in that scene was the look on Dobby's face when Mark was struggling to answer, as if he was really pitiful and sad just because he didn't know anything about music, as if she was just finding this out about him, "Oh no, my boyfriend's square", surely by now she must have realised? ![]() I just don't see what's that great about any music from the last 20 years and I think it's stupid how young people define themselves so much by their tastes in music. I think that's idea, Mark and Dobby are starting to drift apart and her friends are supposed to seem like twerps.īut that music quiz scene was good and I really felt for Mark, because like him I've never really gotten into music like everyone else seems to, I kind of wish I had but it's never happened, I still like things like The Rolling Stones (which is still isn't modern) but I've never had a CD collection or follow current music and my music knowledge is minimal. ![]()
